About Us
Black Student Union (BSU) MEMBERS
The Shawnee Mission West Black Student Union includes Black students, student allies, and adult allies:
BLACK STUDENTS
Black students are youth in grades K-12 who are members of the Black community. According to the Pew Research Center, the Black population of the United States is extremely diverse. Its members have varied histories in the United States – many are descendants of enslaved people, while others have recently arrived in the United States. The Black population also has nuanced ethnic and racial identities reflecting intermarriage and international migration. Black students need opportunities to learn about the details of their culture and history.
STUDENT ALLIES
Student allies are youth in grades K-12 of all ethnicities and backgrounds who support, empower, and stand up for others. Student allies need opportunities to connect and learn about the history and cultures of all people.
ADULT ALLIES
Adult allies are staff and community members of all ethnicities and backgrounds who support, empower and stand up for youth who are part of underrepresented groups and youth who are allies. Adult members of BSU work together to provide opportunities for all students to connect and learn about Black culture and history.

BSU FAMILY & FRIENDS
We hope all of our family and friends in the community will help ensure all students have access to educational and social programs that are related to Black history and culture. We will send more information to all who join a Black Student Union as members.
